Transforming Violation and Loss into
Community-based Solidarity and Action
Dan Baron Cohen

Dan Baron Cohen: playwright and director, currently president of the International Drama/Theatre and Education Association.  He worked in Ireland and England as a theatre practitioner and an academic.  He has been involved in cultural development work for the past 10 years in Brazil.  He has given workshops and lectured all over the world, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Australia.  A student of Edward Bond, Augusto Boal and Ngugi Wa Thiong'o(father of African Renaissance), Dan Baron Cohen has developed his own pedagogical approach called Transformance (transformation through performance) which focuses on dialogue, community building, cultural action and change, utilizing music, dance and theatre.  Participants in his workshops will explore the history of themselves and their communities and reflect on their present circumstances.

Dan Baron Cohen will engage those present at his talk in a dialogic experience with an extremely interesting powerpoint of works that he did in Brazil. Brazil, being a fast growing economy in the world, has been undergoing a process in which communities were violated, transgressed, brutalized and Dan Baron Cohen's work, through arts and theatre, intervenes to generate solidarity and action.

Dan Baron Cohen’s visit is funded by China - UK: Connections through Culture, British Council.
