The 4th Hong Kong Touch Art Festival Exhibition

Curator’s Word

The Center for Community Cultural Development (CCCD) has been making a lot of effort on the promotion of touch art development in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Touch Art Festival have received vast support from artists and arts groups, which allows the festival to thrive immensely within the past three years.

The theme of this year's Touch Art Festival is “Mind’s eye”.  It is to explore the ability of how human can experience psychological imagery. In other words, the concept of "Mind’s eye" refers to the ability of how we can "see" inside our brain. Through the sense of touch, imagination, memories, and perception of everything we have been through, a scene or an image will have been constructed inside our mind. Through this year’s Touch Art Festival, we would like to have a reflection on the process of artistic creation and also the way we appreciate artistic works. Will “Mind’s eye” be able to broaden our artistic vision further than the eye of the flesh?

Artworks are located in the L1 and L0 galleries, and mainly divided into several areas, including:

Artworks created by the collaboration of both the artists and visually impaired people through the exchange of experience and thought, interactive artworks which require the audience to experience its form through their hands and body, artworks and tactile books which show the interpretation of two dimensional works with three-dimensional creative techniques, creative artworks with various forms of materials and audio description of artworks produced by visually impaired people. We hope to provide alternative perspectives for our audiences to appreciate and experience artworks.

The aesthetic of touch art emphasizes the sensory communication (non-visual) created through the process of touching the objects. It can be perceived through the shape and texture of the work, and not its color, lines, composition and the space. Therefore, artistic works of touch art emphasize their being touched. Through touching the art, its texture, material, temperature, combining with the shape of the work, smell, and sound (if any) would produce unlimited imagination. It is a form of art in which the blind can participate, and we strongly encourage audience to use senses more than just the visual sense to explore and understand art.

In The 4th Hong Kong Touch Art Festival, we are seeking for a breakthrough. We hope the exhibition will have more interaction with the audience through experiences and participations, not only perceiving through eyes. We look forward to inviting audiences who are willing to explore with us using their "Mind’s eye".
